Arashiyama Monkey Park Tickets & Prices

In short: ¥800 per adult, ¥400 per child (ages 4–15), under 4 free. Payment is cash only at the gate when you arrive; no advance tickets exist, no reservations, no online sales. (This applies whichever name you searched — Iwatayama Monkey Park and Arashiyama Monkey Park are the same place.) What you can book are guided tours from $31 that pair the monkey park with the Bamboo Grove and temples — those prices are separate from park entry and include a live guide.

Cash only, at the gate

The park charges ¥800 to enter. You pay when you arrive at the bottom of the hill, in Japanese yen, in cash. No credit cards, no digital payment, no mobile wallets. The ticket booth is at the entrance, south of Togetsukyō Bridge. Bring enough cash; there is no ATM on the path up the mountain.

No advance tickets or skip-the-line

You cannot pre-buy tickets online. You cannot reserve a time slot. You cannot skip a line (there rarely is one; the hill itself is the barrier). Just show up, pay your ¥800, and start climbing. On peak days in spring, you might wait a few minutes at the ticket office. That’s it.

What about guided tours?

The park entry fee does not include a guide. What you can book separately are 4–5 hour walking tours that start at $31 and take you to the monkey park plus the Bamboo Grove, Tenryū-ji temple, and Arashiyama’s quieter streets. These tours include a live local guide, handle the navigation for you, and explain what you’re seeing. The tour price does not include park entry — you still pay ¥800 cash at the gate.

Comparing park entry vs. guided tours

Usually included

  • Entry is straightforward: ¥800, cash, no reservation
  • Park is open year-round, 9:00–~16:00 daily
  • You control your own pace at the hike and feeding hut
  • Visit any time without booking

Not included

  • No guide explanation or history
  • You navigate on your own
  • No help finding quiet sections or best times to visit
  • A tour adds culture, company, and no-wrong-turn confidence

Budget breakdown for a visit

Solo, self-guided: ¥800 (entry) + train & food. Total: roughly ¥2,000–3,000 ($13–20).

With a guided tour: Tour ($31–59) + ¥800 entry + train & food. The classic walking tour ($59) bundles the whole district; the budget matcha tour ($31) is the cheapest way to see it all with a guide.
