The Hike to Arashiyama Monkey Park: Time, Distance & Difficulty
The route breakdown
You start at the Ichitani-Munakata Shrine gate (south of Togetsukyō Bridge) and begin climbing immediately. The path is a mix of packed dirt and stone steps, well-maintained and easy to follow. There is a small refreshment hut and rest area part-way up, where you can take a break, use the toilet, and buy water or a drink.
The climb is steady but relentless — you are always going uphill, always climbing. There is no flat section. For the first 15–20 minutes, you ascend through forest and past small shrines. Around the 20–25 minute mark, you emerge at the summit clearing, where the monkey park hut, feeding cages, and benches are located.
Who will find the hike hard?
The hike is moderate. Most people with reasonable fitness manage it in 20–30 minutes. However, it can feel harder if:
- You are visiting in summer (July–August) — the sun is intense, the path offers little shade, and heat radiates off the stone. Go very early (6:30 am) or late (after 4 pm). This is when a guided tour is worthwhile: it times the hike for the cooler morning.
- You have mobility issues — the path is all stairs and uphill with no flat breaks. Crutches or severe knee/hip problems make it slow or risky.
- You are carrying a heavy bag — if you have luggage or a large backpack, the climb is longer and harder. Use a locker.
What to wear and bring
Wear normal trainers or walking shoes. The path is stone steps and packed dirt; no technical climbing gear is needed. Trainers with a bit of grip are ideal; avoid flip-flops (they slip on wet stone).
Bring water. There is a vending machine and a small hut halfway up, but it’s wise to carry a bottle from the start. In summer, 1–2 litres is sensible. The hike itself takes 20–30 minutes, so you will not be thirsty, but the elevation and sun add up.
Wear sun protection in summer: a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. The path has stretches with no shade.
Not stroller-friendly
The path is narrow in places and stairs dominate. Strollers (prams) are impractical. If you are visiting with a very young child, consider a backpack carrier (baby on your back) or waiting until the child is old enough to walk the distance.
Honest advice
The hike is not a "nature trail stroll". It is an unrelenting climb for 20–30 minutes. That said, most people do it without stopping. If you hike regularly, it will feel easy. If you do not hike often, pace yourself, take breaks at the halfway hut, and arrive early to avoid heat.
