JR Sagano (San-in) Line — the popular route

From Kyoto Station, follow signs to JR Sagano Line (also called the San-in Line). Take any rapid or local train heading toward Arashiyama or Sagano. The route is: Kyoto Station → Nishi-Oji → Saga-Arashiyama Station. It takes roughly 15 minutes and costs about ¥240. Trains depart every 15–30 minutes.

When you arrive at Saga-Arashiyama Station, exit and walk downhill toward the river. Look for Togetsukyō Bridge (the distinctive red wooden bridge). At the south side of the bridge, near the river, you will see the entrance: a small shrine gate (Ichitani-Munakata Shrine torii) marking the start of the uphill path to the monkey park. The walk from the station takes 15–20 minutes.

Hankyū Arashiyama Station — the shortest walk

If you are already on the Hankyū Line (e.g., from downtown Kyoto or Osaka), Hankyū Arashiyama Station is the closest — just 5 minutes on foot to the park entrance. Exit the station, head toward the river, cross Togetsukyō Bridge, and look for the Ichitani-Munakata Shrine gate on the south side.

Randen tram — scenic alternative

The Randen (Arashiyama Railway) is a small, open-sided tram that runs through the district. Take it to Arashiyama Station. From there, it’s a ~10 minute walk to the park entrance at Togetsukyō Bridge. Less direct than JR, but a charming ride.

The entrance: Ichitani-Munakata Shrine and Togetsukyō Bridge

No matter which station you leave from, your landmark is Togetsukyō Bridge, the distinctive red wooden bridge in central Arashiyama, very near the Bamboo Grove. At the south end of the bridge, look for a traditional shrine gate (torii) belonging to Ichitani-Munakata Shrine. This marks the start of the path up to the monkey park. The address is 8 Genrokuyama-cho, Arashiyama, Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto.

From the Togetsukyō Bridge entrance, the hike up takes 20–30 minutes. The path is well-kept dirt and stone steps; follow the signs.

Getting there from the Bamboo Grove

If you are already visiting the Bamboo Grove (free, 15–20 min walk away), you can easily walk from the grove to the monkey park entrance in about 15–20 minutes. The two make a natural pairing.
