Morning vs. afternoon: monkey behavior

Monkeys are most active early, especially between 9:00 and 11:00 am. They are feeding, playing, grooming, and moving around the summit clearing. The feeding hut is lively — monkeys cluster at the wire mesh hoping for ¥100 apple or peanut bags. This is when you see the most monkey action.

Late afternoon (after 2:00 pm) is calmer. The monkeys rest in shade, groom, or wander down the mountain. You will still see them, but there is less frantic activity. Some visitors prefer the quieter afternoon mood; others want the busy morning.

Baby monkeys (April–July)

Young are born roughly April to July. During these months, you often see tiny infants clinging to their mothers’ backs, or nursing while the mother moves. If seeing baby monkeys is important to you, plan a visit in spring or early summer. However, they are not guaranteed; births vary year to year.

Seasons and weather

October–November (autumn): Cool (10–18 °C), low humidity, clear skies, fewer crowds. Ideal. The maple trees in Arashiyama turn red; beautiful light on the path.

April–May (spring): Mild (12–20 °C), cherry blossoms fading, azaleas blooming on the mountainside. Moderate crowds. Baby monkeys present.

June–July: Warm and humid (18–28 °C), lush green forest. Baby monkey season ends. Crowds building.

July–August (peak summer): Hot and humid (28–35 °C). Peak crowds. The stone path reflects heat. Midday is genuinely uncomfortable. Go very early (6:30–7:00 am) or late (after 4 pm) if visiting in summer.

September: Still warm (20–28 °C), crowds start thinning. More breathable than August.

December–March (winter): Cold (0–10 °C), sometimes snow or ice. Fewer tourists. The summit view is often clearer. Quiet and meditative, but bring a warm jacket.

Insider tip

Visit in October or November if you can. The weather is perfect, crowds are manageable, and the light is beautiful. If you must visit in July or August, arrive by 7:00 am or book a guided morning tour ($59–74) that times the climb for the cooler hours.
